RAD presents “Leftover City,” an exploration of urban potential found in the city’s often-overlooked spaces. The exhibition began with a fundamental question: what constitutes an “ideal” city beyond the conventional urban landscape?
RAD’s interpretation of “ideal” encompasses a wide range of factors, from lifestyle and social well-being to sustainability and community. Faced with limited exhibition space at the biennale, RAD creatively repurposed leftover areas – staircases to nowhere, locked cages, and neglected niches – that the curatorial team considered problematic.
This led to a deeper investigation into Hong Kong itself: what prevents it from becoming an ideal city? By focusing on the city’s edges and drawing inspiration from its inherent resourcefulness, RAD imagined an “ideal HK” by transforming these underutilized spaces into cozy, beautiful areas that reflect the intentions of its inhabitants.
“Leftover City” ultimately aims to spark a conversation about rediscovering forgotten clues, restoring imagination, and making Hong Kong a more ideal city for everyone by unlocking the potential hidden within its neglected corners.
