This 300 m long site in Dwarka presented an unusual challenge in hotel design, while also providing an excellent opportunity for TAJ to develop an impressive landmark in this new and growing district.
This is a 500 keys hotel. The client had one major requirement: the design should allow the hotel to expand from FAR 1 to FAR 1.5 without undue waste and complexity, and without disturbing the guests.
In reaction to these requirements, we decided to break the hotel into 6 blocks.
This use of blocks simple in form, for ease and speed of construction, allowed us to optimize the construction phasing and FAR expansion without compromising the concept and disrupting the hotel operation.
By breaking down the mass, the scale of the building thus becomes understandable, and each rock-like block will be varied in design to emphasize its individuality. The use of consistent geometry and materials across the facade design of all blocks ensures that the building is a collection of individual parts within a coherent overall strategy.
The South side of the building will be provided with a landscaped garden inspired by rich Indian tapestry and carpets. The gaps between the blocks become viewing windows to this landscape, and they also enable the building program to spill into the garden, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.
